Schedule & Learning Objectives

The following outline details course content and learning objectives. These topics are subject to change as we are continuously improving our course.

The general learning objectives for the Flight Instructor Refresher course are:

    • Establish and maintain professional credibility;
    • Maintain and continuously improve professional knowledge and skills;
    • Plan and conduct training in accordance with regulatory requirements;
    • Conduct instruction in an ethical manner;
    • Stimulate and sustain learner motivation and engagement;
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of instruction.


    Day 1

    Welcome / Ice Breaker

    Flight Instructor Guide(FIG) 

    By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

    1. Improve their understanding of instructional skills; and
    2. Apply as appropriate to PGI and airborne instruction.

    Threat and Error Management (TEM) 

    By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

    1. Explain aviation physiology, psychology and ergonomics;
    2. Recognise common errors, procedural errors and poor equipment handling to avoid undesirable states;
    3. Propose "what if" questions to stimulate decision making activity;
    4. Develop in flight situations to exercise critical thinking skills;
    5. Conduct the post flight briefing and critique the self assessment by training pilot; and
    6. Apply TEM to scenario based situations.

    Flight Safety Brief 

    By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

    1. Explain the five elements of SMS; and
    2. Explain their role as a flight instructor within SMS.

    Preparatory Ground Instruction 

    By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

    1. Present an effective PGI on selected exercises from the flight training manual using the FIG; and
    2. Suggest improvements for observed PGI.

    Day 2

    Preparatory Ground Instruction Cont.

    By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

    1. Present an effective PGI on selected exercises from the flight training manual using the FIG; and
    2. Suggest improvements for observed PGI.

    The Flight Instructor, The Professional 

    By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

    1. Indentify the need for professionalism in Flight Instructing; and
    2. Define the qualities and characteristics of a Professional Flight Instructor.

    Airborne & Debrief 

    By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

    1. Improve airborne techniques through identification of weak flight test items;
    2. Improve debriefings.

    Aircraft Pre flight inspection 

    Participants may be divided into groups and be lead by an AME through pre-flight and Daily Inspection of the Grob. By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

    1. To explain the process and importance of defect reporting; and
    2. To identify previous snags or items noted in aircraft log books.

    Day 3

    Flight Training Weak Areas / Flight Tests

    By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

    1. Explain the purpose of flight testing;
    2. Identify recent changes to the flight test guides;
    3. Examine low score areas on flight tests; and
    4. Brainstorm effective training strategies to improve learning in these areas.

    Ground School / Written Exams 

    By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

    1. Identify the weak knowledge areas from the Transport Canada web site with respect to the following written exams: PPL, CPL;
    2. Examine low score areas on written tests; and
    3. Brainstorm effective training strategies to improve learning in these areas.

    Terminal Airspace 

    By the end of this workshop, the participants will be able to:

    1. Identify ways in which pilots and ATC can work together as a team to ensure safer and more efficient operations; and
    2. Interpret common and unique ATC instructions and clearances.
